Using the 97 has certain advantages over the 117 in that the 97 allows for CEs.
The main issue with the 97 being used with iron is that the element does not allow the H tangential to be discontinuous across the iron - air interface. To permit this, you need to have coincident nodes at the iron-air interface and couple the in-plane A components.
